Mix up your daily routine and refresh those tired eyes with a peek into Timothy Joshuaā€™s (@timoteijosh) imagined world, inspired by Kevin Marten Wongā€™s ā€œAltered Straitsā€.ā£ ā£ā£ ā£Phosphenes ā€“ the odd flashes of light you sometimes see when you give your eyes an oh-so-satisfying rub (itā€™s also an idea I have been obsessing about). Imagine rubbing your eyes in disbelief as you live in a dystopian world, and realising that there is perhaps some hope after all in living in a utopia. That was the inspiration behind this piece as I realised the stark contrast between the world in Altered Straits and the idyllic one in the piece I was responding to. ā£ ā£ā£ ā£I have also inserted subtle and not so subtle hints on the title I wrote about. Altered Straits is a really interesting take on Sci-Fi with a Singapore setting and I like its mix with alternate history and its subtle references to contemporary Singapore. Fantastic world building that you shouldnā€™t miss! ā£ ā£ā£ ā£Spice up your reading list and grab a copy of the book for yourselves from @epigrambooks and @kinokuniya_singapore. Be sure to send in your responses to #SingLit using #StayHomeStayLit2020, and you could stand a chance to win one of the featured books in our weekly giveaway!ā£ ā£ā£ ā£#SGCultureAnywhere #StayHomeforSG #goodeads #readersofsingapore #bibliophile #whatareyoureadingsg #readingnationsg #supportsinglit #supportlocalsg
