We speak with Ms Jessica Lee, who performs as Anna on Disney On Ice (DOI) and shares about her life as a professional skater and performer, as well as what happens behind the scenes of DOI.

Ms Jessica Lee is a performer on DOI and takes on the role of Anna. Before joining DOI, she was a competitive skater and represented Team USA at various international competitions from 2013 to 2016. 1. What is your background as a skater?
I started skating when I was just 7 years old. Before joining Disney On Ice, I competed in both disciplines of singles and pairs skating, but found the most enjoyment and success in pair skating! During my competitive career, I had the honor of representing Team USA at international competitions as a junior-level pair skater. I was a part of Team USA from 2013 to 2016, and some of my competitive highlights include winning the bronze medal at US Nationals (at the novice level) and winning the gold medal at Challenge Cup, my first international competition at the junior level.
2. How did you get involved with skating?
My story of how I began skating is quite random and funny actually! When I was 7, I attended an ice skating birthday party for one of my classmates. Unfortunately, I was incredibly uncoordinated and unable to skate without my father holding my hand and holding me upright. Thus, my mother was worried that if I attended future skating parties, I might get hurt due to my lack of natural abilities. So, she signed me up for group classes to give me a basis of knowledge for the sport. From there, I started improving quickly and learned to love the sport! The rest is history!
3. How did you start skating for Disney on Ice?
When I was 17 and had just graduated from high school, I was at a bit of a crossroads in my life. I knew I wanted to take a gap year before attending University and was trying to decide if I wanted to continue competing or not. When the competitive season was approaching and I did not have a partner to compete with, I decided to apply to Disney On Ice as a way to continue performing in the sport I love and find a path away from competition. Once I was a part of the company, I decided that this was where I was meant to be and happily concluded my competitive career.
4. Did you choose your role? And is Anna your favourite?
There is an amazing casting director for Disney On Ice that decides who to cast for each role. Thus, I did not get to choose my own role, but Anna is certainly my favorite Disney character and I am so thankful to be portraying such a fun character!
5. What is your favourite part of performing as Anna?
My favorite part of performing as Anna is when I get to make connections with kids in the audience. I love when kids come dressed up as a member of the “Frozen family” (Anna, Elsa, Olaf, or Kristoff) and I get to create a special moment with them!
6. If you could choose your role, who would you choose to skate as?
Honestly, if I was given the choice, I would still choose to perform as Anna. I love how relatable, clumsy, and awkward Anna is, but at the same time, she is such an inspiring character and it is a blast getting to portray such a beloved character!
7. What are some of the responses when you tell people that you skate as Anna at Disney on Ice?
Frozen is such a fun and well-known Disney movie, so I love getting to tell people that I portray one of the main sisters! Anna is definitely a fan-favorite character and I think people are just as excited to see Anna and Elsa, as we (the skaters) are to portray them.
8. What will your routine be like on performance day? Is there a good luck action or charm that you do / have for each performance?
Before a show, I like to arrive at the arena 2 or more hours early to put on my makeup and warm up my muscles to skate. I don’t have any specific rituals or superstitions, but I tend to do the same warm-up and stretch routine to prepare me for each performance.
9. What do you do after performance day?
On my days off, I love to explore the cities that we are performing in. In fact, I spent my first day off here exploring the Gardens by the Bay, and I am super excited to explore more of Singapore!
10. What is one thing the audience will be surprised to know about the skaters / skating at Disney on Ice?
I think one big surprise of the show is the aerial acts! Not only is there amazing skating in the show, but this show also features 2 aerial acts (on the silks and Spanish Web), and these routines show even more of the athleticism and skill of the performers.
