The trick to staying warm comes from layering, as it helps trap warm air in between, which then acts as an insulator. By layering up, you can also easily adjust your warmth level by removing/adding an extra layer. Let’s check out the 3 fundamental layers for protecting yourself and your kids from the cold.

Base Layer: Wicks Away Moisture

A good base layer is essential to not only retain your body heat but to wick away sweat as well. Yes, your body perspires even in cold weather! This is an important feature as water draws away heat from your skin when it evaporates. Hence, it is important to stay dry, comfortable and warm with a base layer during winter. We’d recommend the Base Layer Top 100 for your little ones. It is a warm ski layer designed with a brushed component, flat seams and stretch knit for added warmth and comfort. It is also made with a component that aids with moisture management by wicking away moisture.

If you are looking to go to an area that is especially cold, it is recommended that you look for thermal base layers, which are made up of 2-ply fabric. This traps more body heat than your normal base layers, keeping you warmer in colder climates. We’d recommend the Ski Base Layer Top. It is a good compromise between warmth and breathability. It is designed with a smart body mapping that encourages quick drying and wicks away sweat.

Pro tip: Try to avoid 100% cotton base layers as cotton tends to absorb your sweat, which may make you feel colder.

Mid-Layer: Retain Body Heat

The main purpose of a mid-layer is for insulation by retaining your body heat. The better your mid-layer, the warmer you will be. There are a variety of mid-layers to choose from, each having its own pros and cons.

Let us break down how you can decide which mid-layer is right for your little one! Firstly, fleece jackets tend to stay warm even if it gets damp, and they dry quickly. However, they are not as effective against the wind. For a fleece jacket, we’d recommend the Kids Fleece Jacket MH150. Featuring a double-sided microfleece, this jacket ensures optimal comfort. The polyester knit of the jacket also allows any vapour produced by the body to escape quickly.

The next option for a mid-layer is a down feathers jacket. Down jackets are extremely lightweight and compact, and they offer much more warmth for their weight compared to any other insulating material. However, the downside is that they lose their warmth rather quickly once they get wet.

The last option for a mid-layer is a synthetic down jacket. These jackets replicate the benefits of down feather jackets but are designed to be water-resistant and continue to insulate even during wet weather. However, they may be heavier and bulkier than down feather jackets. We’d recommend the Kids Padded Jacket MH500 for a synthetic down jacket. It is made with wadding, a synthetic filling, for maximum thermal insulation in the cold.

Outer Layer: Protects Against Weather

While the previous 2 layers help to create warmth and lock it in, the third layer protects you from rain and snow. This is important because if these elements get into your inner layers, it will be difficult for you to stay warm.

There are a few things you should look out for when getting an outer layer:

  1. Picking a waterproof outer layer

A waterproof outer layer is important to prevent water from rain or snow from seeping into your inner layers. Depending on the weather you are expecting, you can pick out jackets that either have a waterproof coating or are made of waterproof material. For a waterproof jacket, we’d recommend the Kids’ Waterproof Jacket 550. Featuring a 10000 mm membrane, fully taped seams and a hood, this jacket offers excellent waterproof protection.

  1. Picking a windproof outer layer

Strong winds can make it feel much colder than it is, therefore it is important to choose a good windproof outer layer if you are going to windy areas. We'd recommend a jacket like the Kids' Waterproof Winter Hiking Jacket SH100 X-Warm. Featuring a fleece-lined hood, along with cuffs that can be tightened and an elastic jacket hem, it limits snow from entering your jacket. Furthermore, the outer fabric coating makes this a windproof jacket as well.

  1. Picking a breathable outer layer

If you are thinking of adding outdoor activities to your winter holiday, it is good to choose a breathable outer layer which is able to direct moisture out while preventing wind and water from entering your inner layers. No jacket can totally be waterproof and breathable, so do consider this trade-off when choosing an outer layer. For a breathable outer layer, we’d recommend the Kids’ Warm and Waterproof Ski Jacket - 100. It is designed with a breathable component and helps in wicking away perspiration. It also features fleece lining for maximum warmth and comfort.

Important Accessories

Lastly, do not forget your accessories as well. Having the right headwear, gloves, socks and shoes is essential when it comes to keeping you warm!

[Left to Right] Kids Ski Beanie - Light Grey ($15.90), Kids Winter Gloves 100 Age 4-12 - Black ($13.90), Kids’ Warm Waterproof Snow Hiking Boots SH100 X-Warm ($40.90)

Here are some recommendations for winter accessories curated for you, from Decathlon. The Kids Ski Beanie provides great warmth, featuring a Peruvian shape with very high coverage and full fleece lining. Keep your hands dry and warm with the Kids Winter Gloves 100. Designed with an elastic tightening system at the wrist, it prevents snow from getting into your gloves. As for your boots, we’d recommend the Kids SH100 X-Warm Snow Hiking Boots. These warm boots are easy to put on thanks to the wide opening and rip-tab adjustments. The material and grooves on the sole of the boots provide a good grip on the slippery snow as well.

We hope this guide helps you to keep the little ones warm this holiday season!
