Dislocations: Memory and Meaning of the Fall of Singapore, 1942 at National Museum of Singapore

Venue: National Museum of Singapore, Exhibition Gallery, Basement 1
Date: 29 Jan - 29 May 2022
Admission: Free

We start off with a rather somber exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore. Dislocations: Memory and Meaning of the Fall of Singapore, 1942 commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Fall of Singapore in WWII through the sharing of lesser known memories and perspectives of the war.

Dislocations will bring together different personal accounts and examines the impact of war memory on Singaporeans before and till today. It goes beyond the usual WWII narratives to showcase an extended timeline of the war to provide a deeper understanding of the people’s experiences in wartime Singapore - including British families evacuating from the country just before the war, the defensive preparations by locals and more.

While it is not a "fun" exhibition for children, it will be a good visit for parents or for older children to better understand the war and the impact it had on different groups of people. For a more kids-friendly experience, families can try out the immersive pre-exhibition game, Sunset in Singapore, that allows visitors to encounter the war through the lens of various groups of people in Singapore at that time, such as an Allied soldier, nurse, or civilian.
