In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the National Day 2020 parade has moved online, along with it so has a host of events and activities celebrating the nation’s birthday.

We’ve rounded out all the happenings so that you can still join in Singapore’s 55th birthday celebrations together with your family from your home!

1. National Gallery Singapore: Façade Light-up, Digital Art Programs and Free Admission

National Gallery Singapore has a series of on-site and online programs that you can explore with your family in commemoration of this National Day.

You can participate in a series of activities and live programs such as Art + Live, a series of performances by artists, poets, musicians, and art therapists; City Hall: If Walls Could Talk (Digital Edition), which recounts the defining moments in our nation’s history that occurred around and within the City Hall building and; Words That Count, a self-guided, therapeutic online art program.

Visitors to the Gallery in August will enjoy free admission to all exhibitions. Additionally, Singaporeans and PRs can redeem a free one-year Gallery Insider membership (worth up to $120 in value). Perks of the membership include unlimited and priority access to all exhibitions, and discounts on dining and shopping the National Gallery Singapore’s Docent-led Programmes.

You can also look forward to Gallery Light Up from 24 Jul to 30 Aug 2020. The Gallery’s façade will be illuminated in the national colours of red and white while the exterior of the Gallery’s central veiled canopy facing the Padang will feature rotating projections of 60 artworks by artists in Singapore.

2. Singapore Art Museum: Film Screenings and Hands-on Activities

Singapore Art Museum celebrates this National Day season with a special line-up of arts-related programs.

Kicking off this suite of programs is 'Stay Home Shorts: National Day Edition' which features four heart-warming short films by local filmmakers, free for viewing only for a limited period on SAM’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

You can participate in 'Project 2020' and ' This Little Red Dot can be…' by creating short films or illustrations inspired by your ideas and hopes for Singapore.

There’s also the 'Kopi, Teh and Contemporary Art Online' sessions featuring multilingual tours especially for the older folks. You can discover more about contemporary art through a virtual guided tour of SAM’s collection.

3. Asian Civilisations Museum: Self-guided Tours, DIY Crafts and Interactive Stories

In celebration of Singapore’s 55th Birthday, Asian Civilisations Museum will be offering a myriad of online programs.

Expect National Day classics with the Lorong Boys (a Singaporean instrumental band), live pre-registered portrait illustration, a National Day-themed self-guided trail and educational online activities, such as puzzles, quizzes and an upcycling craft activity.

You can also explore the virtual twin of the museum’s newest permanent galleries – Fashion & Textiles, Jewellery, and Ceramics from your mobile, desktop or VR headsets, if you have a pair!

Jazz up your selfies with ACM’s two new AR filters. Inspired by the new Fashion & Textiles and Jewellery galleries, the filters allow you to – for the first time ever – digitally try on fashion and jewelry pieces from ACM’s collection! Or try out Multicultural Questions, which will put your object knowledge to the test. The filter pairs masterpieces from the museum’s collection with fun interactive quizzes.

On National Day, visitors to ACM will be able to purchase ACM Treasures: Collection Highlights, at a discounted price of $15 (U.P. $25) at ACM’s Museum Label shop. The book, which follows the structure of the museum’s permanent galleries, features nearly 200 objects in full color, each with a short explanation.

4. Sentosa: Flag of Unity Featuring Well Wishes for Singapore

In a rallying call for Singaporeans to stay united as the nation works together to emerge stronger from the challenges, Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) is inviting Singaporeans and friends of the nation to share their hopes and aspirations for Singapore, in a massive Flag of Unity that will form this year’s National Day Parade (NDP) theme, “Together, A Stronger Singapore”.

Organized in conjunction with this year’s National Day Parade, the display will span 4,500sqm across Siloso Beach, and feature 10,000 recyclable red and white flags, each carrying one heartfelt message. 

You can submit your wishes for Singapore, or read the celebratory messages from others at their site from now till 8 Aug 2020. As part of National Day celebrations, every 20th submission will also receive a pair of wireless earbuds worth $20!

After the completion of the Flag of Unity, the flag materials will be upcycled into usable items like bags.

5. Singapore Sports Hub: Virtual National Day Fiesta

The Singapore Sports Hub is bringing back their annual National Day Fiesta, with a virtual twist in celebration of Singapore’s 55th birthday. The 55-minute show will be broadcast on the Singapore Sports Hub’s YouTube channel at 1 pm on 9 August and will be hosted by Ah Lian, played by Michelle Chong.

Gather your family around the living room for K-Pop Craze as KpopX Fitness, and more than 20 K-Pop and Hip-Hop dance groups lead a 30-minute fitness and dance party with exciting dance moves and tunes for everyone.

Ah Lian will be joined by local celebrities Pornsak, Lee Teng and Royce Lee to lead the community in a #PlankThatSong challenge. If you think your planking game is strong, join in the challenge, where you have to sing a National Day song while maintaining good form in a plank position. A special segment in the show will feature user submissions.

6. SFCCA & SCCC: National Day Sing-along

Clad yourself in red and sing your heart out at the 14th National Day Sing-along!

The annual event will be live-streamed on 8 August from 7.38 pm to 9 pm on SCCC Facebook  Page,  SFCCA Facebook page and Capital 958FM Facebook page. Singaporeans from all walks of life are invited to come together virtually, from wherever they are, to sing their love for Singapore in unison.

You can look forward to a spirited sing-along led by homegrown singers Abby Lai and Win, as they belt out familiar local tunes such as Home, The Stream That Flows Forever, and Voices From My Heart. Several Chinese associations such as Guang Wu Club and Nam Hwa Opera have also pre-recorded songs that will be screened during the sing-along.

There will also be an appreciation ceremony to thank the many unsung heroes who have helped to keep Singapore safe amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The special guest, President Halimah Yacob will be delivering an encouraging message for the ceremony.

10. Our Tampines Hub: Interactive Games, Live Performances and Workout Sessions

Virtual National Day celebrations at Our Tampines Hub will be kicking off at 8 am on 9 Aug on their Facebook page with two 55-minute ‘Dance Through The Decades’ workout and Muay Thai workout with the National Team athletes.

Following which, from 10 am to 1 pm, there will be live-feeds from the official National Day celebrations featuring fan-favorites such as the fly-past and mobile columns, which will be passing by the Hub in the afternoon.

From 1 pm to 6.30 pm, you can enjoy stage and musical performances hosted by Edmund Toh and Kelly Loh. The line-up for live stream performances includes music acts like Shigga Shay, Taufik Batisah, and local comedians Fakkah Fuzz, Judee Tan as Dr. Teo Chew Mui, and Broadway Beng.

You can continue your National Day celebrations even after the live stream on Our Tampines Hub mobile app’s ‘Celebrate National Day 2020’ microsite. The microsite, which will go live at 00:55 on 9 Aug till 18 Aug 2020, will feature 3D interactive games, online sports, arts, community, and lifestyle entertainment.

Now that all our wildlife parks have opened, you can join our wildlife friends and go Wild About Singapore this National Day!

At the Singapore Zoo, you can watch our animal ambassadors – a Singapore special canine, sea lion, lemur, and coatimundi – unveil their special birthday wishes to our nation in their respective shows. Drop by the Otter Exhibit and be delighted by the antics of the incredibly smart Asian small-clawed otters as they engage with enrichment activities.

You can also embark on the WILDerful Singaporeans Explorer Trail. Collect a complimentary BINGO card from the activity booth in Singapore Zoo and partake in family activities at the exhibits of native species in the park.

Watch the otters demonstrate how they recycle used items in the Once Upon A River show at River Safari and get up close with the Brahminy Kite, one of Singapore’s most often-sighted raptors at Jurong Bird Park, where you can also catch our winged friends wow with majestic flights.

If you rather stay at home, Wildlife Reserves Singapore also has virtual programs and online games for you to join in the celebrations, such as the Junior Ranger Mission: WILDerful Guardians Rescue.

Hosted by Jean Danker, the celebratory concert will feature top local talents Nathan Hartono, Taufik Batisah, Inch Chua, and Yung Raja, along with popular local comedians Kumar, Gurmit Singh, and Suhaimi Yusof, among others.
